Manhattan is a borough of New York City that is located on the island of Manhattan. It is home to many iconic landmarks and neighborhoods, and it has played a significant role in the development of the United States. [Pre-Colonial History] The island of Manhattan has been inhabited for thousands of years by various Native American tribes. The first recorded European visit to the island was in 1524, when Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano arrived in search of a passage to the Pacific Ocean. [Dutch Colonization] In 1624, the Dutch established a settlement on the southern tip of the island and named it New Amsterdam.
