When a strike three call ended the Mississippi Valley State and New Orleans NCAA game, questions of whether the home plate umpire abused his authority by deliberately calling a ball a strike to get back at a player who had shown him up surfaced. The umpire elected not to discipline the player for potential misconduct, but on the ensuing 1-2 pitch called a third strike on a pitch that appeared to the batter (and broadcast crew) to be out of the strike zone, effectively ending the game (two outs, two-strike count in the 9th inning). The batter followed the umpire and attempted to argue, but the umpire walked off the field without addressing the batter as the opposing catcher—whose team had just won the game—restrained the batter of the team that had just struck out (and whose team had lost). While NCAA, NFHS, OBR and other codes in other sports and levels afford game officials the authority to ejected a player, coach, or team representative for misconduct or unsportsmanlike conduct (NCAA 2-26; MLB s version is Official Baseball Rule 8.01(d)), no sport s rulebook allows a strike to suddenly be deemed a ball or vice versa. If the umpire simply misjudged the pitch, that is what is known as a good faith mistake.
