Miami s head coach argued that his opponent waited too long to challenge a call after umpires reviewed a play despite more than 60 seconds transpiring since the initial call. During Clemson s ACC Championship game vs Miami, Clemson wanted and got a HR review. Was it proper? In pro ball, it s 15 seconds after the hold signal given after the play and in college, it s 30 seconds after the play itself (which follows a hold signal within 10 seconds of the conclusion of play). But umpires here went to review even though Clemson s head coach didn t signal with his hands over his ears until well over 60 seconds past the play—longer than the 30-second challenge limit. Why did the umpires allow the play to go to review? The answer is that in both college and professional baseball, potential home run plays, including questions of spectator interference with a fair fly ball over the outfield wall, are not subject to manager or head coach s challenge but to crew chief (umpire-initiated) review. Whereas teams are restricted via time limits in requesting challenges, umpires may invoke a review at any time up until the first pitch to the next batter (or next play).
