This talk examines how early cinema engaged with the questions of the visible body through a reading of the picture board and illustrations for a film by Ramavarma Appan Thampuran, writings on cinema from 1900 to 1950, and other archival documents. About the speaker: Bindu Menon Mannil is an Associate Professor of Media Studies at Azim Premji University, Bengaluru. Her work and research lie at the intersection of Film History, Media Theory, Feminist Theory, migration and media, and Indian Ocean history. Her essays in these areas of research have been published in Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa, and Middle East, Biograph, Bioscope, South Asian Popular Culture, Studies in South Asian Film and Media, Journal of Creative Communications, Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication, and edited volumes. She is the co-editor of Film Studies: An Introduction ( Worldview Books, 2021). She engages in public writing in English and Malayalam. The JANAL Lecture Series presented by Kerala Museum excavates the rich tapestry of Kerala s past, providing a nuanced understanding of its evolution and the interconnectedness between its cultural heritage, societal dynamics, political developments, and environmental transformations. Through its interactive design, these sessions bring together academicians, research scholars, students and history enthusiasts and make academic and learned pursuits on history accessible to all.
