On 5th February 2024, the Central government passed the “anti-cheating” bill titled The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Bill, 2024 in Lok Sabha. The bill was proposed by Union minister Dr Jitendra Singh and aims at stopping paper leaks and malpractices in recruitment examinations and entrance tests of civil service, union ministry, railways, public banks etc. like UPSC, SSC, NEET, JEE, and CUET. Dr. Singh announced that the bill targets organized gangs and institutions engaging in unfair practices like paper leaks for financial gains while safeguarding candidates from its provisions. Therefore, the proposed bill suggests a minimum of 3 - 5 years of imprisonment for cheating and 5 - 10 years imprisonment along with ₹1 crore fine as punishment for a person or group of people including the examination service provider found guilty of organized cheating. All offenses under the Bill are non-bailable, and non-compoundable. This means that the police can take action without a warrant, the accused won’t be eligible for bail, and offenses cannot be settled through compromise. The bill is awaiting approval from the Rajya Sabha and President Droupadi Murmu. We don’t understand why people cheat in exams, especially in public service exams like UPSC when the designation it provides after passing demands utmost honesty. We believe that no matter how hard one has to try, or how many attempts one has to give, one should pass the exams on their own merit with full honesty u0026 without cheating. And we learn this principle from IPS Manoj Kumar Sharma. He failed his HSC then his UPSC prelims and main exams multiple times but he didn’t cheat, rather he worked harder for the next attempt everytime he failed.
