Motivated by principles of justice and equality, Louis the Tenth declared that any person setting foot on French soil would be freed, as France signifies freedom. After this, many slaves from the Islamic world, that were able to flee from it, arrived in France and became free men. The edict, known as the Ordinance of 1315, was groundbreaking, establishing France as a refuge for the oppressed. Although slavery returned in the seventeenth century, this time to the colonies, under Louis the Thirteenth, the medieval edict set a precedent for the eventual abolition of slavery in other parts of Europe, and underscored the emerging human rights ideals that would later be pivotal during the Enlightenment, French Revolution, and Abolitionism movement.
