History has been written by “the Victors”;  those in positions of power-monarchies, elected officials, and people of wealth. The internet and contemporary mass communication platforms have become disruptive forces ushering in a new era that holds the potential to democratize the writing and rewriting of history. This week we shine a light on some of the African American women who have helped change the world we live in. And, we issue a challenge to America’s future leadership. Janis F. Kearney and Shadia Alvarez share their extraordinary personal journeys, discuss their first-hand experiences of American civil rights history, and the struggles of women and people of color over the last millennium.

Tom Eddington is an author, Executive Coach, Business Advisor, and Executive Producer of documentary films. As a scholar of Conscious Leadership, he is passionate about bringing more conscious leadership into the world which he does through his coaching and advisory work, film and media projects and Board positions. As CEO of Endangered.global he brings his commitment and experience to impacting climate change and biodiversity loss. He holds an M.S. in Organization Dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania.
Panelists:

Janis Faye Kearney grew up surrounded by dirt roads, bayous and cotton fields. The author and publisher wears her southern-ness on her sleeve and writes about hers and other southerners’ miraculous and banal lives through short stories, memoir, autobiography, biography and fiction.From the cotton fields of southeast Arkansas, Janis’s path took her many places, including her role as publisher of the Arkansas State Press newspaper founded by civil rights legends Daisy Gatson Bates and L.C. Bates, and as Personal Diarist to America’s 42nd President William J.Clinton. A more recent role is founder and president of the Celebrate! Maya Project, a nonprofit she and a handful of women created after the death of the iconic Maya Angelou in 2014. In 1989, Janis was recognized by the Arkansas Democratic Black Caucus for her leadership in Journalism. In 2016 she was inducted into the Arkansas Writers Hall of Fame, and that same year, received the University of Arkansas Lemke Journalism Award. Janis’ most recent book is Only on Sundays: Mahalia Jackson’s Long Journey, a creative nonfiction chronicling the New Orleans native who became America’s first ever Queen of Gospel.


Shadia Alvarez is a passionate and dedicated educator and community leader. She is a proud product of New York City public schools and of progressive education. Ms. Alvarez graduated from Antioch College with a BA in Urban Education. Upon graduation. Shadia served as Assistant to the President for Multicultural Affairs, Admissions, and Community Development. Being the first to occupy the post, she developed and spearheaded the fundraising to create an Office of Multicultural Affairs and Community Affairs at Antioch College. Shadia’s love for Antioch and its motto “Be afraid to die unless you have won a victory for humanity,” has kept Shadia at Antioch. Since 2010 she has been an active member of the Board of Trustees of Antioch College. In 2017, she was appointed by the Board to serve as a member of the Executive Committee of the Antioch College Board of Trustees. Ms. Alvarez holds advanced degrees from Teachers College Columbia University and has dedicated her life to being an antiracist organizer and educator, working in partnership with communities and institutions to undo the legacy of racism, and create models for a new way of being, based on human rights. She is today Executive Director of The Coretta Scott King Center for Intellectual and Cultural Freedom and Senior Officer for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Antioch College.
