Joykrishna Mukhopadhyay, a prominent Bengali landlord (zamindar) and social reformer, is said to be one of the pioneers of the nineteenth-century Bengal Renaissance. Jayakrishna Babu was the first signatory of Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar s petition to introduce widow marriage. Jayakrishna established more than 35 schools and 10 health centres in his various Zamindari areas. The municipality of Uttarpara founded by him is the oldest municipality in Mughal Bengal founded by any Indian. He established a library in Uttarpara which was the first free-of-cost public library in Asia. His brother Vijaykrishna and later his successors Harihara, Pratapanarayan, Raja Pearymohan etc. contributed to the progress of education and society in Bengal. About The Speaker: Debasish Mukherjee is the 6th descendant of Babu Joy Krishna Mukherjee. He is the family historian of the Mukherjee family and the author of 4 books. He hand mapped the Family Tree of Mukherjees of Bengal which contains 4,359 persons. His photograph on Mount Shivling has been printed in the book India Unveiled written by Robert Arnett. Kaushik Mukherjee is the 5th descendant of Babu Joy Krishna Mukherjee and the great great grandson of Raja Peary Mohan Mukherjee. He is an MBA from a top University in the USA and was the lead vocalist of the famous rock band Fahrenheit. Kaushik works as a Senior Consultant in one of the world s largest Business Consulting firms.
