( 112571 viewed : 812 like : 4 comments ) The ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 is going on in the West Indies and USA but there's a lot more cricketing action going on across the globe on the Women's side and now South Africa Women travel to India for a long tour which will include 3 ODIs one Test match and 3 T20Is against hosts India Women which will also be a useful build-up for the Women's T20 World Cup later in the year.
First up is the three-match ODI series and all three games will be played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Given it is a long and all-format tour both sides have a core group of players for all three formats and both also have some fringe players depending upon the format.
Hosts India Women will once again be led by Harmanpreet Kaur with Smriti Mandhana acting as her deputy. Uncapped wicketkeeper-batter Uma Chetry has also been included in the ODI side. The likes of Jemimah Rodrigues and Pooja Vastrakar are also a part of the squad but their participation will depend on fitness results.
The batting line-up seems well balanced and as usual they do have some excellent spin bowling options with the likes of Deepti Sharma and Radha Yadav in the mix whereas Renuka Singh will be expected to make breakthroughs with the new ball.
The confidence of the side might not be at an all-time high as they drew against Bangladesh Women in their last series and were well beaten by Australia Women after that and will be hoping for a turnaround in performances and results. South Africa Women on the other hand parted ways with their head coach of 11 years or so Hilton Moreeng and will look to usher in a new era. Laura Wolvaardt will lead the side which boasts of some very familiar faces and a few returning ones as well but one big name in the form of Chloe Tyron will be a big miss due to a recurring back injury.
On the other hand another big name Tazmin Brits has recovered from a knee injury and will be a part of the side. Given the Proteas Women are a bit light in the batting department a lot will depend on that lethal pace trio of Marizanne Kapp Masabata Klaas and Ayabonga Khaka to do most of the damage with the ball. Nadine de Klerk is another player who could be a difference maker as she can make handy contributions with both bat and ball.
The Women's ODI World Cup is next year in India which makes India Women as automatic qualifiers and South Africa currently sit third in the points table behind the likes of England and Australia and this series could really bolster or hamper automatic qualification for the Proteas.
