On July 2, riot police used tear gas to disperse protesters in Kenya s capital, Nairobi, as demonstrations occurred in various towns following a week of deadly clashes. Reuters journalists reported tear gas clouds on a main road in central Nairobi, where riot police had been stationed since early morning. Outside the capital, Kenyan TV stations showed peaceful protests with hundreds carrying palm fronds in Mombasa on the Indian Ocean coast and dozens marching in Kisumu on Lake Victoria. In Migori, protesters set tires on fire. The protest movement, which operates without official leaders and organizes via social media, has rejected President William Ruto s appeals for dialogue despite his abandonment of proposed tax increases that sparked the demonstrations.
