They were in a good position when Shakib fell to Ayub's part-time spin but Litton Das launched a counterattack in the final hour and reduced the deficit quickly. He and Rahim have added 98 runs and it has come in just 118 balls.
The second new ball was taken and that didn't work as Litton took apart Naseem in one over where he smashed him for 18 runs. Pakistan need to break this partnership and getting into the lower order if they're to gain a first innings lead. And for Bangladesh if they can negotiate the first hour then they will be in the driver's seat.
Full credit to Shadman and Zakir for negotiating the tricky period and going back unscathed. But the day belongs to Rizwan and Shakeel. The pair have put Pakistan in a commanding position thanks to their 240-run partnership. It has been a superb turnaround from the hosts; reaching 448/6 after being reduced to 16/3. Shakeel and Rizwan batted smartly mixing caution and intent. They batted through the first session and cashed in during the second session.
Both of them got to their respective hundreds and though Shakeel fell to Mehidy Rizwan carried on to record his career-best score. Masood declared with an hour's play left and unleashed his pace attack but the Bangladesh openers weathered through the period. Who's going to come out on top on day 3?
The light has deteriorated and the umpires have called it off with a minute left for the scheduled close. Overnight rains delayed the start of the Test but we did manage to get in almost half a day's play. Bangladesh won a good toss as the pitch was under covers for a lot of time and there was assistance for the fast bowlers early on.
Shoriful and Mahmud picked up three early wickets and put Pakistan under pressure. Shakeel joined Ayub and the pair managed to steady the innings. They did not buckle down and instead batted with intent to keep the scoreboard ticking. Ayub reached his maiden Test fifty and threw it away right after the drinks break but Shakeel has carried on and has started to stitch another partnership with Rizwan.
In their six-series bilateral history in Test cricket beginning 2001 Bangladesh have not registered a single win against Pakistan. A head-to-head record of 12-0 [one draw] in favour of Pakistan does not augment well for the visitors either. But cricket is a funny game as they say and Bangladesh will have come to the shores of Pakistan to prove a point not just to the world but to themselves -
that they belong at this level.
Bangladesh were heavily defeated in their last series against Sri Lanka in March this year. But a series draw to New Zealand last winter should provide them with confidence heading against an unpredictable Pakistan side. Civil unrest and turmoil having engulfed the country over the last month has seen many Bangladesh Cricket Board officials flee the country. Quality Test cricket might provide the general public some respite and maybe even a smile even if it is a faint one.
The hosts meanwhile haven't played a Test match for the best part of this year. Their last Test series was the 3-0 drubbing away at the hands of Australia. A new head coach and fresh ideas should rejuvenate a team which has flattered to deceive most times on the field. Naseem Shah's comeback into the squad is a major boost after his injury while batters Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique will look to cement their place in the Test lineup for the foreseeable future.
