JAKARTA, INDONESIA -
Pope Francis visits Jakarta, meets President Joko Widodo, other government officials, civil society, the diplomatic corps and members of the Society of Jesus in the Apostolic Nunciature.
Pope Francis lands in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, kicking off a historic trip to the Asia Pacific region. He will also travel to Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste and Singapore as part of his visit, which is expected to focus on inter-religious harmony
The 12-day trip will mark the longest time the pontiff has spent away from the Vatican
The marathon trip comes despite the fact that the 87-year-old has been battling health problems and using a wheelchair in recent months. The Pope's visit is a chance for Indonesia to showcase its credentials as a moderate Muslim-majority country, according to some observers.
Asia Pacific is one of only a few places in the world where the Catholic Church is growing in terms of baptised faithful and religious vocations
Pope Francis will arrive in mostly Muslim Indonesia on Tuesday on the first part of a tour that will also take him to Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Singapore.
Medan, Indonesia – At the Immaculate Conception of Mary Cathedral in the Indonesian city of Medan, the mood at Sunday mass was unusually excited.
Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church, is set to begin a two-week tour of Asia Pacific, which will start in Indonesia on Tuesday and take in Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Singapore.
When Pope Francis visits Indonesia this week, he will stop by a mosque in Jakarta that has an unusual feature -
a tunnel connecting it to the city's Catholic cathedral, as part of a push for interfaith harmony on his 12-day Asia-Pacific tour.
The 28.3-metre Tunnel of Friendship , connecting the iconic Istiqlal mosque to the Our Lady of the Assumption cathedral, was built by the government in 2020 as a symbol of religious harmony, a theme the global head of the Catholic church has also emphasised on his travels during his 11-year reign.
