( 73781 viewed : 368 like : 1 comments ) Another hard-fought session to close out a hard-fought day of Test cricket. Three days in and we don't really have a favourite yet that's how good the cricket has been! 103 runs and 3 wickets in that session. After a great partnership from Chandimal and Karunaratne Sri Lanka lost three wickets in a cluster. New Zealand had another opening to get ahead but skipper DDS and Mathews got stuck in at the crease and helped Sri Lanka wade through some murky waters.

Batting certainly wasn't easy. The odd ball exploded off the surface and New Zealand tried to exploit the footmarks with little success. Mathews survived a close shout right towards the end of play and Sri Lanka managed to get through without suffering further damage. They've claimed a very respectable lead of 202 already but wickets have come quickly during the morning sessions and New Zealand will be banking on that.

A disciplined batting performance on the second day has sit-ups New Zealand into a position of control over the hosts in Galle. After Will O'Rourke's 5-wicket haul kept Sri Lanka down to 305 the visitors saw every top-order batter getting about start but it was half-centuries from Tom Latham and Kane Williamson which saw them gain ascendancy.

Both though failed to convert their starts into significant scores but Daryl Mitchell has looked positive and the onus will be on the right-hander to push the score forward. New Zealand are 255 for 4 and only 50 runs behind the hosts at the moment -
any lead is a good lead in sub-continental conditions but on a pitch which is already showing signs of deterioration New Zealand will need a good enough first-innings lead to put the hosts under pressure.

Considering they'll have to bat last. Sri Lanka will hope for a better bowling effort especially from their spinners who were guilty of constantly dropping it too short or too full. There's enough help and bite from the surface and they will still believe that they are a couple of early wickets away from restricting New Zealand.

Sri Lanka navigated a tricky wicket to great effect yesterday to post 302/7 and they'll be hoping that their tail can stick around and add another 50 runs to really put them in a position from where they can call the shots. As for New Zealand while they bowled well for the most part they let ball drop in the last session allowed the opposition sieze momentum.

There's still plenty of help from the wicket for the seamers and particularly spinners so New Zealand will hope to wrap this innings up quickly before getting stuck in with the bat. The wicket seemingly broke up quite a bit just after one day's play and there were explosions off the bowlers' footmarks so batting will only get more difficult as the game goes on.

Hello and welcome to the coverage of the first Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand from the Galle International Stadium in Galle. New Zealand will pose a tough challenge against hosts Sri Lanka in the first Test of the two-match series in the Island Nation starting on Thursday (September 19) at the Galle International Cricket Stadium Galle.

After beating the Bazball merchants England at the Oval the Sri Lankans will look to upbeat a challenging New Zealand lineup. They have three series (six Test matches) pending in this World Test Championship cycle where five victories will take them into the finals. Thus a whitewash over the Blackcaps will be paramount for the Lankans.

Pitch Report (Farveez Maharoof): Good to be back at Galle. A special place to play Test cricket. The conditions are looking outstanding. Speaking about the pitch it looks fantastic. I haven't seen this much grass on the pitch here in my entire career. There might be some movement for the fast bowlers early on. First 30-45 minutes will be crucial for the pacers. If you can pile up runs while batting first here you are in the game.
