Set at the Cagliostro Academy of Magic on the continent of Arcaus, which is under threat from ash and dust, the story follows the protagonist, Shin, and his older apprentice sister Aria, who is like family to him; the princess Ceres, who aspires to be an alchemist; his familiar Enri, who searches for the meaning of his existence; and the ash demon Namtar, who takes on the appearance of a girl resembling Shin's younger sister. Shin undergoes various experiences and strengthens his relationships with them as together they face off against Oblivion – a cataclysmic event that threatens to destroy their world. This game is made up of an adventure component – you build relationships with your companions by increasing your interactions with them. There is also an RPG dungeon component – you adventure while making contracts with Gods of Creation (the guardians of the world) which allows you to borrow their power. You can also strengthen your party with equipment acquired by gathering materials and performing alchemy on those materials. In addition to collecting Crests (crystals of the Gods of Creation) and performing alchemy on equipment, the various difficulty levels and level resets give the player many possible ways to experience this game and give it a high replay value.
