Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte said on Friday she had been preparing since last year for impeachment and would welcome on her defence team her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, if interested to join.
Sara Duterte said she had not read the complaint against her endorsed by majority of lower house members but her lawyers were gearing up for a trial in the Senate, reported Reuters. The Senate's president has said that could take place in June.
Asked during a press conference if her resignation was an option, she said: We're not there yet. Those things are still too far off.
The Philippine lower house of Congress on Wednesday endorsed an impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte, the daughter of the country's former president, Rodrigo Duterte, paving the way for a rare trial in the Senate. A bill of impeachment will be sent to the upper house, where the 23 senators would serve as jurors in proceedings that could result in the removal of Duterte and her lifetime disqualification from holding office. Duterte would be the Philippines' second most senior official to face removal from office. The grounds for impeachment were not immediately clear. Duterte has consistently denied wrongdoing and has described moves against her as a political vendetta.
