( 1054 viewed : 84 like : 10 comments ) Cisco Modeling Labs (CML) describes itself as a network simulation platform. It does simulate lab environments – but it goes far beyond that with the individual network nodes. CML allows you to start and stop Cisco networking device operating systems (called RefPlats by CML), executing a version of the same software found on real Cisco devices.
So, consider CML a network lab virtualization tool rather than a simulator.
Cisco originally released CML as the VIRL tool around 2016. They continued to invest in improving the product, but for most of its history, CML was not a great fit for CCNA study. However, Cisco introduced the CML Free Edition (CML-Free) in 2024, making the tool much more reasonable for CCNA candidates.
This video introduces CML and focuses completely on using it to study for the CCNA. I do not attempt to discuss every feature and function of the product. Instead, I hope to give some guidance to anyone who’s thinking about studying for the CCNA. Let’s get into it!
