This lecture breaks down the three main layers of the skin, their functions, and the key cellular components involved in maintaining skin integrity, immunity, and sensation. 🔍 The Three Main Layers of the Skin: Epidermis – The outermost layer, composed of keratinocytes arranged in stratified squamous epithelium. It is avascular, meaning it relies on the dermis for nutrient exchange. Dermis – The middle layer, containing blood vessels, nerve endings, connective tissue, collagen fibers, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, and hair follicles. This layer supports the epidermis and provides sensory input. Hypodermis (Subcutaneous Fat) – The deepest layer, made of adipose tissue that acts as an insulator, shock absorber, and energy reserve. 💡 Key Cells Found in the Epidermis: Keratinocytes – The primary structural cells of the skin, producing keratin, an essential protein for strength and protection. Melanocytes – Cells responsible for melanin production, which protects against UV radiation and determines skin pigmentation. Langerhans Cells – Immune system cells that detect pathogens and initiate immune responses. Merkel Cells – Specialized cells involved in light touch sensation, connected to nerve endings in the dermis. 🩺 Stratified Layers of the Epidermis (From Deepest to Superficial): 1️⃣ Stratum Basale – The innermost layer, where new keratinocytes are continuously produced and begin their journey upward. 2️⃣ Stratum Spinosum – The thickest layer, containing desmosomes, which create a ""spiny"" appearance under a microscope. 3️⃣ Stratum Granulosum – Houses keratohyalin granules, essential for skin barrier function. 4️⃣ Stratum Lucidum (only in thick skin) – Found in areas like the palms and soles, providing an extra layer of protection. 5️⃣ Stratum Corneum – The outermost layer, made of dead keratinocytes, forming a protective shield against the environment. 🔬 Why Is Skin Anatomy Important in Medicine?
