Gilas Pilipinas Women’s Basketball Versus Chinese Taipei
HERSTORY MADE. For the first time, Gilas Pilipinas Women’s Basketball wins a group stage game in Division A of the FIBA Women s Asia Cup, beating Chinese Taipei, 92-81! Head coach Pat Aquino had mentioned before how he wanted the women s basketball national team to compete against the world s best and not just settle for the promotion-relegation game. The way they played against the Australian Opals, it easily looked like they were headed there yet again. But Gilas Women was undeterred. But after a competitive showing against Japan that showed silver linings and this historic win, they re now headed to the knockout stage for the first time in a powerhouse continent which has four of the top 12 nations in the FIBA women s rankings. Vanessa De Jesus had 25 points on 11-of-19 shooting, Jack Animam had 16 points and 15 rebounds, while Afril Bernardino added 18 points, 10 boards, 3 assists, and 3 steals. The Philippines shot 55.07% from the field overall, 43.75% from 3, and had a 41-34 lead in rebounding. Up next is either Korea, China, or New Zealand. Congratulations, Gilas Women!
