Manhattan is a borough of New York City that is located on the island of Manhattan. It is home to many iconic landmarks and neighborhoods, and it has played a significant role in the development of the United States. [Pre-Colonial History] The island of Manhattan has been inhabited for thousands of years by various Native American tribes. The first recorded European visit to the island was in 1524, when Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano arrived in search of a passage to the Pacific Ocean. [Dutch Colonization] In 1624, the Dutch established a settlement on the southern tip of the island and named it New Amsterdam. The Dutch were attracted to the area because of its strategic location and natural resources. [British Colonization] In 1664, the British took control of New Amsterdam and renamed it New York City. During the British colonial period, Manhattan became a major center of trade and commerce. It was the site of the first capital of the United States, and it was the location of many important events during the American Revolution. [Growth and Industrialization] In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the city experienced rapid growth and industrialization. It became a major cultural and financial center, and it attracted many immigrants from Europe and other parts of the world. [Cultural Influences] Over the years, Manhattan has been shaped by a variety of factors, including immigration, urbanization, and cultural influences. Many different ethnic and cultural groups have contributed to the diverse population of the borough, and this diversity has played a major role in its development.
