( 3916 viewed : 274 like : 24 comments ) There's a bit of debate about whether this the first official release of “Words” was for Georgie Fame or the Bee Gees. But what’s certain is that Barry, Maurice, and Robin Gibb (the Bee Gees) wrote the song. Initially, they had intended it for Cliff Richard, but due to scheduling conflicts, he couldn't record it. As a result, the brothers offered the song to the filmmakers of “The Mini-Mob”, where Georgie Fame performed it in 1967. The Bee Gees recorded their own version later and released it in 1968. The song reflects a mood and was written after an argument. Barry Gibb had argued with someone, Robin had argued with someone, but the arguments were about nothing. They were just words. The Bee Gees turned it into one of their biggest early hits, reaching number one in our country, as well as in Canada, West Germany, and Switzerland. Boyzone covered it and scored their first number one with it. The band began their journey as an Irish Take That , a boyband shaped by the success of their British counterparts. Previous and other hits were Key To My Life , Cat Stevens' cover Father & Son , No Matter What and Picture of You , the hit song from the Mr. Bean movie for which leadsinger Ronan Keating won the prestigious Ivor Novello Award. This live performance of “Words” was taped for Dutch TV program “Cor & Co” on November 25, 1996.
